Basic Mormon Foreword
Doctrine Mormon Doctrine in its Essence

Our study of the basics of Mormon doctrine follows the foundational tenets of Mormonism:

  1. Mormonism believes its god was once a man and is now an exalted being, a being of flesh and bones.
  2. Mormonism professes that Mormons can become an exalted being like their god, and receive their own worlds to rule as gods.
  3. As gods, Mormons will enjoy the reward of eternally procreating spirit children with which to populate their world (known as eternal increase).
  4. Mormonism outlines a divinely-ordained,  detailed, "Plan of Salvation".  This plan consists of a process of progression, centered on works.  If successfully followed, it  results in attaining godhood.  This plan also defines alternative eternal destinations for those who fail to follow it successfully.

The Basics of Mormon Doctrine section is organized into the following chapters.

  1. Foreword (This chapter)  The Foreword explains the organization of this section of the web site. It also provides background that explains some tactics of how Mormon doctrine is presented to Mormons and the rest of the world.  These tactics are critical to understanding how and why Mormons believe as they do.
  2. Latter Day Saints' Goal looks at Mormonism's goal in detail, including examining the different ways this goal is portrayed in Mormon doctrine, exploring current Mormon teaching on the subject, and explaining the key criteria for attaining this goal.
  3. Plan of Salvation (Chronological) looks at the Mormon plan for attaining the goal.  A timeline is used identifying key stages and events in the progression from 'spirit child' to god.
  4. Plan of Salvation (Theological) looks at a range of doctrinal topics that are essential to this plan.
  5. LDS Authority looks at the various sources of authority claimed by the Mormon church.  This includes scriptural authority, authority endowed on men, continuing divine revelation, and the authority of personal, god-given, feelings.
  6. Attractions & Stresses examines the result of Mormon doctrine.  In particular,  we explore the topics of why Mormon doctrine is attractive to many people and how it burdens those who attempt to follow its prescribed plan.
